Although most orthodontic treatment begins when a child reaches 12 or 13 years of age, the benefits of early orthodontics for kids start around age 7. Many orthodontists use early monitoring to track potential trouble areas and prevent future orthodontic problems. This early intervention is integral to healthy growth.
The Benefits of Early Orthodontics for Kids
Early orthodontic treatment, also known as “interceptive” treatment, is performed before all your child’s baby teeth have fallen out. This treatment generally begins around age seven because there are enough adult teeth present to help determine the potential for future problems.
After an initial visit to an orthodontist, parents can expect one of three results:
- A determination is that no treatment is necessary.
- Future treatment may be necessary, so the orthodontist may continue the monitor growth.
- A current problem exists that requires early treatment.
Early orthodontic treatment is preventative. Small problems can be corrected during the growth period, preventing larger problems later. When the cause of a problem is fixed, the result is better overall health.
Setting up Early Orthodontic Monitoring and Treatment
If your child is experiencing any problems with their jawline, over- and underbites, extremely crowded teeth, or other problems with their baby teeth, they may be candidates for early orthodontic monitoring. The goal of early treatment programs is to recognize and eliminate the cause of potential problems and to guide growth.
Although some orthodontic problems are genetic, others are the result of accidents, thumb sucking, and even dental disease. By scheduling your child’s first orthodontic check-up around age 7, and taking a proactive approach, you may prevent many future problems.

The Importance of Good Dental Hygiene
We mentioned earlier that good dental hygiene aids in overall health. While it may seem like that is all hype, it isn’t. Your mouth, when healthy, allows you to eat. If you have dental pain, decayed or broken teeth, or other problems, your diet will change to accommodate those issues. That will affect your health eventually. So, when a dentist stresses good oral hygiene practices, please pay attention.
With that in mind, we wanted to take a few minutes to give you some reminders:
- Brush your teeth at least twice per day. Work with your children to teach them proper brushing habits early.
- Use a soft-bristled brush and a good fluoride toothpaste.
- Brush with circular back-and-forth motions for the best results.
- Don’t forget to brush the back of your teeth also.
- Rinse your toothbrush after use, and keep it clean.
- Replace your toothbrush every three months.
- Remember to floss to get the debris between your teeth that brushing doesn’t reach.
Additionally, using a mouthwash with fluoride will help keep your mouth healthy. Get regular dental exams and cleanings and be aware of potential problems. Good oral health means good overall health.
